The history of Russian statehood is full of interesting events and personalities that can only be traced by the old pages of rare documents from the Archives.
Russian merchant Alexander Shaposhnikoff and German entrepreneur Adolf Schopfer were famous members of Russian and German business societies in the XIX Century. We were lucky enough to find this information in one of St.Petersburg Archives. They were the first ones to open joint enterprise that introduced a wide range of souvenir shops in Saint-Petersburg, the former capitol of Russian Empire. As Schopfer and Shaposhnikoff discussed in their letters, they “opened souvenir shops mostly for ambassadors and functionaries who wanted to bring home something special that could remind them of Russia”. According to historic data “Schopfer and Shaposhnikoff’s” souvenir shops appeared in 1873 introducing a wide range of unique goods mostly for foreigners working in Russia.
The history of the famous stores was likely to turn into a “spy thriller” after the communist Revolution in Russia in 1917. Unfortunately this pathetic historic event ruined the former success of the joint venture.
